Colour Boosting
Sharing experience for colour boosting , based on my C@be (N1wan's ChiliRed)
1. Tanning method a. Sunray , since 7.30am to 11.00am the tank will be exposed to sunray bath at angled direction b. At 11.00am to 20.00pm tanning held by 1 @30W 16.000K TL light (submerged underwater) at just below water level and 1 @20W 16.000K TL and 1@ 20W Actnic Blue 22.000K TL . , The light tube will replaced every 4 months 2. Water management : pH level set at 6.3 and gH level at 8.0-9.0 , salinity low , pH level managed decreasing with blackwater , increasing with water changing ( my arthesis water are pH 7.6, stabil with good buffering capacity level) Oxygen level managed by aerator pump and sprayed water from canister output, O3 treatment 1hour every day to keep sterilize the tank. Blackwater treatment : every 3days ,tank's water changed 30% and treated with blackwater extract to be pH6.3 . gH is lowered using ion exchange resin filtration for new water change (not on the tank). Normally i used 3 bottle @500ml Tetra Blackwater extract every 2 months . 3. Feeding and Diet : Feeded only with crickets , prawns and bamboo worms , diet will be feeded on balance (all 3 types of them in a day) and feeding times is every 4 hours start at 8.00am , 12am, 16.00pm and last at 20.00pm, always never feeded full in one feeding time except for last feeding . 4. Filtration : 2 @ 1500l/h canister filter using bio filtration media , to keep the water balance in biological recycle , the filter is perfectly balanced already and i'm using gravel bed with undergravel pad for intake to canister No heaters allowed , the tank's glass always keep brushed clean for better viewing and tanning but i let the algae growth in the tank to keep the balance of blackwater condition water. |

Hi bro JD,i am curious and would like to find out why do u need to have algae present in the tank to stabalise the water. I have a red which i practice something like yr tanning routine and i also have blackwater in the tank.I also have long hairy algae in there. But i also clear them away.Does the fish benefits from the green algae?? |

Re: Colour Boosting
Not directly but instead i manage the ammonia cycle through my bio canister plus gravel bed filtration and the algae presents to help recycling the ammonia in the tank , water plants do absorb ammonia and CO2 into harmless nitrite and O2 , but remember to boost your aeration at night when plants absorb O2 and release CO2 to the water.
I mean is to manage the water level to more healthy is the benefit to the fish. |

Tks, now i understand. But is a a way to reduce pH but without using BW as i want the water to remain quite clear but at lower pH. |

Re: Colour Boosting
Yes, but also you could use blackwater too and also still get clear water , somehow the balanced bio cycle will always clear the water , i add a lot ( i mean a lot of BW to my tank) to reach pH 6.3 but the plants is always seem neutralized them back to pH 6.5 again, so i add some bogwood and keep pH 6.3 for maybe 3 days before water change and add them again, pretty expensive treatment but worth it when see my ChiliRed juvenile rise it's colour

Great info Prof. JD.

Is it possible to tann the fish using a fiberglass or even a used bathtub? So the light come only from above, none from the side. One more question, at what minimum size we could start tanning our aro? Thanks. |
